Invisible Battles: The Psychological Impact of Cyber Investigations on Digital Forensic Experts
As technology rapidly evolves, so do the tools and techniques criminals employ to conceal their activities. Now that almost every case involves some type of digital evidence, specialized digital forensic units have become a critical mission for law enforcement. However, continued, unrestricted exposure to graphic evidence of abuse, violence and exploitation is taking a worrying psychological toll on researchers. More must be done to address the unique mental health risks experienced by digital forensic professionals, before burnout and trauma deplete this already understaffed workforce.
The growing role of digital forensics
According to the Digital Forensic Science Strategy 2020, developed by the UK National Police Chief Council, “digital evidence is used in more than 90% of cases.” Cell phones, computers, surveillance footage, and online activities leave an electronic trail that forensic analysts meticulously assemble. As such, digital forensics has become one of the fastest growing and most in-demand fields within law enforcement over the past decade.
Globally, many police departments and prosecutors have established their own technology crime units and hired specialized examiners to address the growing need for digital forensics. In the United States, larger state laboratories have also opened to assist smaller municipal forces that lack technical resources. This expansion has meant that the number of forensic cases has doubled or tripled year on year, but while solving more crimes, it has also led to examiners routinely working overtime and accumulating long backlogs. The time required to thoroughly process increasing volumes of cases means that forensic detectives now have longer exposure to graphic evidence than ever before.
The psychological impact of graphic evidence
The 2021 article “Avoiding Burnout in Digital Forensics: Specific Strategies for Forensic Agencies in Managing Work-Related Stress” (Kelty et al.) raised the following concerns:
"Recent evidence shows that digital forensics experts are at risk of burnout and work-related stress. This may be related to increased digital evidence and/or repetitive exposure to challenging material, either face-to-face or through digital imaging in real time or after the event."
Continuous exposure to graphic evidence without interruption or processing time takes an undeniable mental toll on forensic investigators. Studies show that examiners exhibit high rates of secondary trauma, compassion fatigue, avoidance behaviors, and other PTSD symptoms due to prolonged immersion in graphic files during case processing.
A survey of more than 100 forensic analysts found that nearly 90% reported that the job impacted them psychologically, and 35% met diagnostic criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder. Common psychological effects included nightmares, insomnia, anxiety, inability to separate from graphic off-duty images, and increased substance abuse or risk behaviors such as maladaptive coping. Other studies found that forensic examiners were three times more likely to suffer from depression or have thought about suicide compared to traditional police officers.
The isolating nature of forensic work, in which investigators rarely interact with victims and instead immerse themselves in graphic visual records of crimes, exacerbates psychological risks. Lacking supervision or reviews despite disturbing content, examiners describe feeling like “lone soldiers” responsible for facing society's worst acts alone and with little support. Prolonged exposure without breaks or timeouts normalizes the trauma, increasing emotional numbness and still causes severe stress reactions.
To address these issues, some departments are now tracking indicators such as sick leave, errors and disabilities in a bid to understand and mitigate the impact of this demanding profession on the mental health of their staff. Recognizing and addressing these challenges is crucial to both the well-being of examiners and the effectiveness of their vital work.
This is where the use of analysis tools that automate the first investigation processes becomes important, making the search for key evidence efficient.
Artificial intelligence and even the automation of processes between data and evidence help combat fatigue and mental tiredness, obtaining more accurate results.
Strategies to develop resilience
Preventative approaches are currently being developed to build resilience within forensic units and include:
- Mandatory decompression sessions after graphic cases with trauma-experienced mental health clinicians
- Strict limitations on daily/weekly display of graphical evidence.
- Forced “breaks” in which examiners must take a full day off after exceeding graphic media viewing thresholds.
- Increased psychological testing and support through employee assistance programs.
- Peer support groups among forensic analysts to normalize experiences and provide community
- Trauma-informed supervisory trainings for managers to understand indirect signs of trauma
- Policy adjustments allowing unpaid protected leave as long as therapists recommend time off due to distress
While it will take time to institutionalize reforms, smart prevention programs ultimately save money while maintaining the specialized workforce that is so vital to solving crimes. With further study, criminal justice systems around the world can (and should) establish national best practices to support digital forensic professionals tackling society's worst events.
